The Bitcoin Policy Institute lists McCarty as its Executive Director. His published profile records earlier roles as executive director of the Bitcoin Advocacy Project and as co-director of policy and public affairs at Bitcoin Magazine, along with work before Bitcoin that included founding a marketing consultancy, a digital marketing agency and an education startup, and serving as chief marketing officer of a fintech company. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
His name appears on BPI output rather than on its research: the institute's submission to the US Treasury on responsible development of digital assets in August 2022, hiring notices, and the organisation's year in review. That division matters when reading BPI: the executive director runs the organisation, and the arguments are signed by the fellows and authors who make them.
