Mutiny is shut down. The hosted wallet stopped on 31 December 2024, the apps were pulled from the Apple and Google stores on the same date, and the emergency recovery interface that replaced it was retired during the first quarter of 2025. This entry exists because of what it proved, not because you can use it.
The team announced the wind-down on 5 August 2024 in a post written by Tony Giorgio, who was chief executive at the time. The summary line was blunt: "Our company is exploring alternative products, we'll be shutting down the wallet at the end of the year but you can still self host." The reasons given were technical and personal. Lightning wallets kept getting harder to maintain, and Giorgio wrote "I've fallen out of love for Bitcoin and the industry. I'm burnt out and unable to continue on as CEO." He moved to chief technology officer, another team member took over as chief executive, and the company turned to building tools for other developers.
The engineering behind it was genuinely unusual, and the announcement lists it without embellishment: a multi-device, local-first synchronisation store that protected the Lightning state of nearly 50,000 nodes over a year, one of the first Fedimint wallets and the first hybrid Fedimint and self-custodial Lightning wallet, a trust-minimised federated Lightning address server, and a signet instance used by other developers. The wallet compiled a Lightning node into a website, an idea that came out of a hackathon after the team's Apple developer account was flagged as sanctioned.
The shutdown was handled carefully, which is not always the case. Users were told to close channels and move funds well ahead of the deadline, the receive button was disabled on 1 October 2024 so money could only flow out, and self-hosting guides were kept updated. The code remains on GitHub under an MIT licence held by Mutiny Wallet Inc., which is the only public record found of the company's corporate name, and the team recommended forking the repository rather than relying on it staying up.
