Maelstrom

An investment office whose Bitcoin Grant Program funds open-source work on Bitcoin Core, Payjoin, Silent Payments and cryptographic resilience.

What it funds

Maelstrom is an investment office with a separate grant programme for Bitcoin development. Its broader portfolio is not Bitcoin-only. The official about page describes investments across venture, liquid, private-equity and public markets, while the Bitcoin Grant Program is framed as support for the open-source technology on which the wider ecosystem depends.

The programme offers twelve-month grants paid monthly in bitcoin or stablecoins. Its published range is 50,000 to 150,000 United States dollars per developer, with grant stacking permitted up to an annual cap. Applications require a reference and an interview with the review committee. These are programme terms, not a promise that every applicant receives funding or that every supported change reaches a Bitcoin release.

Work recorded in 2026

Maelstrom's June 2026 annual report says the programme began in October 2024 and had supported five developers in its history. Four were supported at the report date: two working on Bitcoin Core, one on Payjoin and one on Silent Payments. The programme page also lists a full-time grant focused on protecting Bitcoin against a future break in elliptic-curve cryptography.

That evidence establishes an active funding role. It does not establish that Maelstrom directs Bitcoin Core, Payjoin or Silent Payments, and receiving a grant does not make those projects Maelstrom products.

Structure and limits

The official site says Maelstrom is managed by a family office and names its professional leadership on the team page. The opened sources do not identify the legal entity that operates the office, its jurisdiction or its registration. The directory therefore records the structure as Undocumented and omits a founding year rather than inferring either from media dates or personal biographies.

No individual profile is required for this entry. The public programme and report establish the funding activity without extending the directory into personal biography. No logo file is added because an attributed, reusable official mark was not established; the site uses its existing monogram fallback.
