Bitcoin Dev Kit

A suite of Rust libraries and language bindings for building Bitcoin wallets, stewarded by the Bitcoin Dev Kit Foundation, a United States 501(c)(6) non-profit.

Every wallet team faces the same problem at the start: key derivation, address generation, chain syncing, coin selection and transaction construction all have to be right, and none of them are the product. The Bitcoin Dev Kit is the attempt to write that layer once, in Rust, and let everyone else build on top. The repository was created in January 2020, and the first public write-up appeared in December that year, authored by Alekos Filini.

The design goals were set out early and have held: well reviewed and tested, lightweight enough for mobile, extendable, generalised through the use of output descriptors rather than hard-coded script types, and exposing a high-level interface that hides the complexity. Descriptors are the load-bearing choice. Because a wallet is defined by a descriptor string, the same library serves a single-key hot wallet, a multisig arrangement, and a miniscript policy without a separate code path for each.

Around the Rust core sits bdk-ffi, a bindings layer that lets Kotlin, Swift and Python developers use the same libraries, which is how BDK reaches Android and iOS apps. A long re-architecture aimed at a stable 1.0 API ran through the alpha and beta releases, and the project has published quarterly updates on its own blog since 2024 and commissioned a code audit that year.

The governance moved from a sponsor to a member body. Spiral funded the work for its first four years and an OpenSats grant followed in 2023. Today the project is stewarded by the Bitcoin Dev Kit Foundation, a United States 501(c)(6) non-profit whose stated mission is to promote the common business interests of the Bitcoin software development industry, and which requires everything it funds to be released as free and open source. Its five-person board is unpaid: Alekos Filini, Lloyd Fournier, Tobin Harding, Steve Lee and Steve Myers, who serves as President. Its corporate members include Spiral, OpenSats, AnchorWatch, the Proton Foundation, CleanSpark and mempool.space. The Foundation's own formation date is not published, so only the project's start year is recorded here.
