Chhabra posted Umbrel's funding announcement to the project's community forum on 29 October 2021 under the account mayank: "I'm so thrilled to announce that we've raised $3M in our seed round to make Umbrel even more awesome for you all!" The same post names his co-founder, pointing readers to a longer piece about "how @lukechilds and I met, why we started Umbrel, our journey so far, and what lies ahead", and says the money would go on hiring a core team.
The work itself is umbrelOS, an operating system that turns running a home server into an app store rather than a systems administration exercise. Bitcoin node software was the starting point and is now one category among many. The company behind it is named in its terms of service as Umbrel, Inc.
The forum post also stated the hiring criteria the company would use: "talent with a genuine love for your craft and the desire to do meaningful work", and explicitly not credentials or degrees.
