Where it came from
SeedSigner's first tagged release, 0.0.2, is dated 20 December 2020. The project's stated goal, in its own words, "is to lower the cost and complexity of Bitcoin multisignature wallet use". The route it took was to stop selling hardware at all.
What it built
SeedSigner is software you flash to a microSD card and run on a Raspberry Pi Zero with a camera and a small screen, parts the project's shopping list puts at under fifty dollars. The result is stateless: seeds live in memory only while the device has power, and every byte is gone when you unplug it. There is no WiFi, no Bluetooth, and no data path in or out except the camera reading QR codes and the screen displaying them.
That constraint produces the features that follow from it. Seeds can be generated on the device from dice rolls or camera entropy, transcribed to the project's SeedQR format for instant reloading, and used to export single-signature or multisig xpubs and to review and sign PSBTs.
No corporation, and no names
The README states the position directly: "Created and maintained by volunteers. There is no corporation. No profit motive." That is a positive claim about the absence of a legal entity, which is why this entry reads Unincorporated rather than Undocumented.
The project publishes no individual maintainer names either. Release verification uses a key the README calls "the SeedSigner project's public key", fetched from Keybase, and the instructions tell you twice to ignore the key IDs and email addresses that GPG prints and to match the fingerprint instead. The public identity of the project is the handle SeedSigner, and this directory names nobody behind it.
What it changed
It removed price and supply chain from the self-custody conversation. If the signing device is parts you bought yourself and software you built from source, there is no vendor to trust and no shipment to intercept. Listing here is not endorsement.
