Foundation Devices

A Boston hardware company that makes the Passport signing device and the Envoy companion app, with published hardware and firmware source.

Where it came from

Foundation Devices, Inc. is a Delaware corporation incorporated in 2020, according to the Form D it filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in August 2021. The same filing lists Zachary Herbert as a related person and gives the company's principal place of business as 6 Liberty Square, Boston, Massachusetts, the address its own imprint page still carries.

The company's own about page names three co-founders: Zach Herbert as CEO, Ken Carpenter as CTO leading hardware engineering and firmware architecture, and Jacob Johnston as VP of Operations covering supply chain and manufacturing.

What it built

Passport is an air-gapped signing device: it has no USB data path for transactions and no radio, and it moves transactions in and out by camera and screen using QR codes, or by microSD card. Envoy is the companion mobile app. The company also publishes KeyOS, the operating system layer, and shipped a later model called Passport Prime.

Foundation publishes its hardware designs as well as its firmware, which is a narrower club than open-source firmware alone. A buyer can read the schematics, not just the code that runs on them.

A note on names

The company's about page lists a Head of Customer Experience under the handle "Bitcoin QnA" rather than a legal name. That is how the company publishes it, and this directory records the handle as the company records it and makes no attempt to go behind it. No person entry is created on that basis, because a pseudonym is a stated preference and guessing past it is not research.

What it changed

Passport arrived after Coldcard had established air-gapped signing and pushed on two different axes: assembly in the United States with a documented supply chain, and published hardware design files. Both are answers to the same question, which is what a buyer can actually verify about a device before trusting it with a seed. Listing here is not endorsement.
