SatoshiLabs

A Prague holding company whose subsidiaries include Trezor, which shipped the first Bitcoin hardware wallet, and Tropic Square, which designs auditable secure elements.

Where it came from

SatoshiLabs tells its own origin as a meeting: "Pavol and Marek meet at the Prague hackerspace brmlab in 2011 and the story of SatoshiLabs begins." Alena Vránová joined during prototype development, and the three of them raised the money that turned the prototype into a company.

The Czech business register gives the corporate spine. SatoshiLabs s.r.o., company number 02440032, was registered on 12 December 2013 in Prague. On 30 September 2021 that same entity was renamed Trezor Company s.r.o. A separate holding, SatoshiLabs Group a.s., company number 08685916, was registered on 12 November 2019 at Kundratka 2359/17a in Prague 8. So the name SatoshiLabs now sits on a holding company formed in 2019, while the original 2013 entity carries the Trezor name.

What it built

The first Trezor, later called the Model One, shipped in 2014: roughly a thousand preordered devices. It was the first hardware wallet anyone could buy. Along the way the team wrote standards that the rest of the industry adopted, including BIP39 (the seed phrase word list) and BIP44 (the derivation path scheme), and later SLIP39 for Shamir backup in 2019.

The group is now four businesses by its own account: Trezor for hardware, Invity for buying and selling, Tropic Square for chip design, and Vexl for peer-to-peer trading without KYC. Tropic Square's TROPIC01 is a secure element whose design is published for inspection, which the group put into the Trezor Safe 7 in 2025.

What it changed

Before Trezor, holding your own keys meant a paper wallet or an offline computer. Trezor made a small, cheap, single-purpose device the default answer, and BIP39 made recovery phrases portable between wallets from different vendors. That portability is the reason a seed written down in 2014 still restores today. Listing here is not endorsement.
